Nadim Sawalha exceeds all expectations with his latest rendition of his own interpretation of the life and times of world renowned Arab poet, artist and writer; Khalil Gibran. Rest Upon the Wind is a journey of Gibran's life that starts 20 years after he immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in the US until he settles in New York!
The play mainly focuses on Gibran's "pregnancy" of his most infamous work of all time, The Prophet, until its "delivery". Sawalha subtly makes references to how Gibran may have possibly come up with the various prose later used in his book. After the play is finished, you feel you know Gibran better yet the mystery that surrounds his character still stands in some sense.
The actors were all brilliant. Fanos Xenofos portrays the character of Khalil Gibran and even though he comes from a non-Arab background; never once did he make the audience doubt that he was not indeed the Great Gibran! His character was proud, smart and mysterious; just as you would imagine Gibran to be in real life.
Myrianna, Khalil's sister, who was portrayed by Dina Mousawi was both funny and witty yet also a strong pillar in Gibran's life. Post the passing of Gibran's mother, the writer tries to indicate that Myrianna probably took over her role in Gibran's life and was probably the major influence to all his writings on "giving".
Pleasantly, young Khalil played by Samer Roz is a Dubai based 8-years old resident! His role in the play was key to putting many of the open-ends portrayed by the older Khalil in context. Through him, we understand why Gibran, and his family, moved to Boston; as well as Gibran's beginnings as both an artist and a writer/poet.
Rest Upon the Wind is a MUST WATCH! You may possibly not agree with the writer's interpretation of Gibran's life but surely one thing is guaranteed and that is you will be influenced by the hardships that the world renowned writer/poet/artist had gone through in solitude to be able to still have his words, written 100 years ago, echo until this very day by the multitude.
Rest Upon the Wind plays in the nation's capital at the Emirates Palace on Saturday October 27, 2012. Tickets can be purchased online from: http://www.timeoutabudhabi.com/aroundtown/events/19442-rest-upon-the-wind
