Kalubela: For the love of music...

Kalubela, a UAE based singing and dancing cabaret-style production, had its debut evening at the First Group Theatre at the Madinat Jumeirah on October 3, 2012. The show runs until October 6, 2012 and tickets are priced at AED 195 per person that can be purchased online from www.madinattheatre.com

The concept of Kalubela appealed to me a lot! The combination of singing and dancing; in theory, can never go wrong. Add to the mix some aerial performances and the involvement of some of Dubai's professional actors and stand up comedians and you are surely in for a treat.

But I must say that my experience of the "extravaganza production" has been like a roller coaster! The entirety of the cast were definitely talented; whether being singers, dancers, narrators or aerial performers but it seems to me that the Director and Producer both needed a little more time in prepping for the show. It was apparent that there was a reliance on the original talent of the cast; and in many instance, the audience had a taste of just that!

What I have interpreted was that this was a show about the different forms of first love (or shall we just say love). The approach is definitely interesting but sometimes there was a disconnection between the elements. Even the songs chosen did not coherently link in to one another. There should have been more thought put in to delivering the story (or stories) and every story (or stories) need a beginning, plot and an ending.

On the pleasant side, the band was super fantastic as they have flawlessly performed every song in the show. On the opening night, there was a surprise guest appearance by an aerial performer who left the audience both wet and in awe (I will leave you to figure out the wet part on your own!). The music selection was diverse ranging from music from the days of Dean Martin and Marilyn Manroe to those of Christina Aguilera.

I was extremely happy to see the inclusion of rising UAE based Palestinian actor Dana Dajani and stand-up comedian Jamil Abu Wardeh (the man who brought you the Axis of Evil). I have been following their work recently and they both indeed have something new and interesting to offer to the creativity industry of the UAE.

I definitely would recommend Kalubela as something different to do ESPECIALLY if you are in to good music! Here's a teaser promo-video of the show, enjoy!
