For the first time since the season kicked off, I decided to watch today's episode of The Voice on MBC. The Voice is not the first franchise bought by the group, ongoing franchised shows include Arabs Got Talent and Arab Idol.
I kept my eye on twitter the entire time the show was on and never did the show make it as one of the most trending topics in the UAE. To my surprise, I discovered that while the show was airing, it was just me and a friend who were tweeting about it...in the whole UAE?!!
Being the analytic person that I like to be, I started thinking about it more and I realized that one reason is probably because the show did not go live yet (hopefully next episode?). Another thing, and this factor addresses a major finding these shows have proved to us is that Arab music talent requires nurturing and training from an earlier age.
Most of the show's participants are individuals who do something and realized that they want to take a shot at singing...as you would treat a hobby. If they make it, then hopefully, the will become famous! But what happened to last season's winners of Arabs Got Talent and Arab Idol; who won again?
Participants need to have stories; singing needs to be their story! They need to be artists and not performers. When I watched today's show of The Voice, with all respect, I didn't click with any of those performers. Don't get me wrong, some of them do have very good voices but when I watch them: win or lose, its like it doesn't make a difference! In Europe and the US, just being part of such shows is already a big break to the participants. Most of them already write and sing their own original work but only require that push from TV to become more known, more noticed!
The Voice on MBC already provides a lot of working platform for the participants to develop themselves throughout their time on the show; but what MBC really needs to consider, is setting up "free" live concerts in between shows for those participants. After the show is done, I think it is on those artists, or their record labels, to support the finalists to produce their own music and help them in doing what they can to promote it. Again, perhaps I am ahead of myself here and this is already in the works for the next phase but me being me, I needed to voice this!
