Elevator Etiquette in Malls

So I was at the mall in Dubai Festival City with my mom the other day and we needed to use the lift to climb up two floors and i was SHOCKED with the lack of common sense etiquette. Here are a few tips to consider the next time you decide to use the lifts at the mall:

Malls in Dubai during the weekends and festive occasions are over-packed, its an unavoidable reality. So, if you are healthy, young, can walk properly, and not with a person or people who really can't walk distances; please use either the steps or escalator!!!

My mom and I noticed two couples were already waiting in front of the elevator and that's when it happened. Every individual, AND I MEAN EVERY INDIVIDUAL who came after us HAD TO push the elevator button even though it was clearly lit indicating that it has been pushed before!

As soon as the first elevator opened its doors, the wolves attacked! No matter who was there before the other, it was survival of the fittest and in this particular instance, my mom and I combined were definitely not the fittest.

When we FINALLY managed to get in, it was really sickening to see that there was still room in the back of the elevator which was enough for at least 2 or 3 more people but that was blocked by a guy with his trolley who didn't even bother to move until it was his floor to get off!

Here's an advice: as soon as you get into an elevator, go in as far as you can and stand clear from the door as best as possible. This will give you and others a chance to move in and out of the elevator more easily. Here's a helpful diagram that I found on where best to stand in an elevator depending on the number of people in there:

When we were at the top floor again waiting for the elevator to take us to the basement, we were shocked with the number of times the doors opened to an elevator packed with people squeezing like sardines but not a single individual would come out! What seemed to us is that people would get in to the elevator that is going up when they are in fact going down (or vice versa)...that was soo annoying!!!

Our culture tells us to be compassionate with the elderly and those with disabilities. If we didn't have to take the elevator because of my mom's heart condition, I would of preferred the escalators. I even saw some people shoving aside a man who was aiding an older lady on a wheel chair just so they manage to get into the elevator first...REALLY? Just remember that one day it could be your own father or mother in that situation!

Got any more etiquette that you would like to share? Please post...

  1. And for the love of God people should stop pushing to get in an elevator while the ones inside are still trying to get out.
